Have you ever overheard a conversation like this around the office?
“I can’t understand it. I sent all of my people to that two week project management course. It covered everything from basic definitions to project management software, but we’re no closer to our project goals.”
“Yeah, it cost me over ten grand to send my project team to that course. We need a new training vendor!”
According to a survey conducted in 2004 by the Standish Group, 29 percent of all projects succeed (delivered on time, on budget, with required features and functions); 53 percent are challenged (late, over budget and/or with fewer than the required features and functions); and 18 percent fail (cancelled before completion or delivered but never used).1
Will we see different results when another project management training vendor is selected? Probably not, if the training remains focused only on technical project management skills.
What we need is a broader focus: we need transformational project management.
